Truck bomb kills 27 members of elite Iranian military branch

A truck bomb attack killed 27 members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and wounded 13 others on Wednesday, NPR reported, citing Iranian media. The members of the elite branch of Iran’s military were traveling on a mountainous route in the southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan Province. The Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium, known as TRAC, posted a tweet allegedly showing that the Sunni militant group Jaish al Adl claimed responsibility for the attack. The Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force unit blamed the U.S., its allies, and Zionism, without explaining the claim further.

House Democratic leaders said Wednesday they were willing to offer President Trump more money for border security — but not for a border wall — in exchange for reopening the federal government. Democrats said they might even offer as much money as Trump wants for the wall, $5.7 billion, for other border security spending. “We are going to be talking about substantial sums of money to secure our border,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the majority leader. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) said $5.7 billion to pay for drones, refitted ports of entry, and other security measures would amount to a “smart wall.” The latest measure voted on by the Democratic-controlled House on Wednesday included an additional $1.5 billion for 75 new immigration judges and their staffs, and better infrastructure at ports of entry

After a 14-year-old driver and his two teen passengers enraged a Houston motorist by egging his car, the target of the ill-fated prank allegedly flashed his handgun and chased them. Running a red light, the teen crashed into a pickup driven by Silvia Zavala, 45, who was found dead at the scene. Prosecutors described her as “the only person who was doing nothing wrong.” The teen driver has been booked into a juvenile detention center, and the man involved in the chase is reportedly cooperating with police.

House Democrats on Monday unveiled a proposal to end the partial government shutdown without the $5 billion President Trump wants to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Democrats take control of the House when the new Congress convenes on Thursday, and their package of spending bills will mark their first showdown with Trump and his Republican allies who still control the Senate. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House Democratic leader, said it would be “the height of irresponsibility and political cynicism” for Senate Republicans to reject the legislation, because it is essentially the same plan they once supported. But a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the Senate “is not going to send something to the president that he won’t sign.”
